INGID Newsletter March 2008

Welcome to the first eNewsletter of 2008. This is mainly concerned with giving you preparatory information for the 2008 INGID Conference to be held i9n s’Hertogenbosch (the Netherlands) from October 16th. until October 19th. 2008, inclusive.

Note that this is the first call for the s’Hertogenbosch conference and for submitting abstracts.

Immunoglobulin Therapy for Children

However, to begin with, we are very happy to report that at the end of 2007 subcutaneous, intravenous and intramuscular immunoglobulins were included in the new World Health organisation (WHO) List of Essential Medicine for Children. In actual fact, this is the very first such list of essential medicines for children that the WHO has produced.

The inclusion of immunoglobulin on this list is mainly as a result of the hard work of members of the INGID, ESID and IPOPI Boards (and other members of INGID, ESID and IPOPI) who have all been working hard towards this result since before the European Consensus Conference on Primary Immunodeficiencies (2006, Langen) which kick-started the whole debate as to the importance of immunoglobulin therapy - not only for children but also for adults. Representatives of INGID, IPOPI and ESID presented papers at this conference, and the results of this conference, and all the other work undertaken by the 3 organisations to improve the situation, mean that immunoglobulin therapy for primary immunodeficiencies is now accepted at the highest levels.

INGID Conference - s’Hertogenbosch 2008

The next biannual INGID Conference will take place in the beautiful city of s’Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, 16-19 October.  The biannual conference of INGID is the major event for the group as it is the time when members can meet, exchange information, learn what is going on in within the field of immunodeficiencies in other countries and centres, find out about new therapies and treatments, and, of course, relax and have fun along with other members of INGID from all over the world.

Since the last (very successful) conference in 2006 (Budapest), the Board members have been working towards this next conference, and since September, 2007, have increased their efforts to try to ensure that the 2008 conference is the better still. The amount of work will increase dramatically over the next 6 months and you will receive regular updates as to the progress being made. This is the first such update, and we would ask that you all consider both coming to the conference (of course) and also to submitting an abstract.

The conference, along with the ESID and INGID conferences will take place in the Theater aan de Parade.

Abstracts:

What you are doing will be of interest to others, so do submit an abstract. This time, we are attempting to have theme days, and therefore particularly ask for abstracts looking at:

  • New therapies and treatments
  • Physical care
  • Psychosocial; care

However, abstracts on other aspects of the care of people with immunodeficiencies will be very welcome as well.

Please note that the last date for the submission of abstracts is June 1st. 2008.

Programme:

We now have a provisional programme that we are still working on, but we think that we already have the makings of a very interesting programme, with something in it for everyone. In addition to the conference programme, we are also putting together a programme of events that will take place outside of the conference in the evenings.

In the next eNewsletter, we will present a provisional programme. However, the success or otherwise of the conference depends upon you, the members, whether you are presenting or not, so please do put your ‘thinking caps’ on and submit an abstract.

Abstracts can be submitted via the conference link:

http://www.esid2008.org/

If you want further advice as to how to submit an abstract, or if you are not sure if what you want to submit is suitable – although we are sure it will be, then please do contact one of the Board members (contact details are to be found on the INGID website (where there is also a link to the main conference web site). Because all presentations are in English, If you have any concerns as to whether your English is good enough, do not worry - submit your abstract anyway, as we will help you with the English.
